The recent Storm Goretti has left a trail of devastation in its wake, marking a significant weather event for the South West. But was it truly one of the most impactful storms in decades?
A rare and powerful phenomenon
According to Professor Elizabeth Kendon, a climate expert from the Met Office, Storm Goretti's ferocity can be attributed to a rare meteorological event called a sting jet. This phenomenon, uncommon in the UK, can generate intense winds that rapidly descend to ground level, causing significant damage.
And the data supports this claim. In the Isles of Scilly, wind gusts reached an astonishing 99mph during the storm. This is a testament to the storm's power and a stark reminder of the potential destruction such weather events can bring.
A glimpse into the future?
But here's where it gets controversial. Professor Kendon suggests that as the climate changes, storms like Goretti could become more frequent. She believes that Goretti is a preview of what's to come in a warming world.
"Extreme wind storms with sting jets are projected to increase...", she warns, emphasizing the challenges in forecasting these events. This is a concerning prospect, especially considering the impact of Goretti on Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
On January 8th, Goretti battered Cornwall, uprooting countless trees and leaving tens of thousands of homes without power. Tragically, a man lost his life when a tree fell on his caravan in Helston. The western coast of Cornwall was particularly affected, with residents enduring days without power and water.
A complex future
Professor Kendon also highlights another worrying trend. As the climate warms, storms are expected to bring more frequent heavy rainfall and flooding, which can further contribute to tree uprooting and subsequent infrastructure damage.
"...it's this tree uprooting that can bring really severe impacts...", she explains, detailing how this can lead to power outages, transport disruptions, and even fatalities.
Additionally, rising sea levels in a warmer world will exacerbate the risk of coastal flooding during storms, a phenomenon known as a storm surge.
