A Wave of Humility: Crystal Conrad's Inspiring Journey
Imagine being told you've won a prestigious award, only to think it's a prank! That's exactly how Crystal Conrad felt when she received the news about Nova Scotia Health's Making Waves Award of Distinction. But this reaction reveals so much more about Crystal's humble nature.
With an impressive 34-year career in healthcare, including two decades as a Public Health Nurse (PHN) in Western Zone, Crystal has dedicated her life to teamwork, humility, and service. Her work in the health protection division has been a true labor of love, supporting individuals and communities affected by communicable diseases.
Crystal's passion lies in health protection, where she believes nursing assessment skills are key. From investigating communicable diseases to educating the public and collaborating with partners, her work is diverse, challenging, and incredibly rewarding.
"We're constantly on the phone with healthcare providers seeking advice. It's about building relationships with long-term care facilities, infection prevention teams, and others to prevent the spread of illness. It's a quiet, behind-the-scenes job, but so crucial," she explains.
And here's where it gets controversial... For most of Crystal's career, the role of health protection went largely unnoticed. That all changed with the pandemic, which brought this unseen work into the public eye.
During this time, Crystal's focus expanded from her zone to the provincial response. She led a team of nurses from across Nova Scotia, many new to health protection, joined by other dedicated Public Health team members. Together, they worked tirelessly with a shared goal: keeping the community safe.
"We had a collective intention. It was transformative and affirming. The relationships built during that time have changed how we work together provincially. Everyone brought their unique skills, and I'm proud of that experience," Crystal reflects.
But here's the part most people miss... Crystal's success is deeply rooted in mentorship. She credits the women who shaped her career, including Kim Benjamin, Karen McMullin, Carolyn Power, Nadine Saunders, and Kim McGill. Their wisdom and mentorship have left a lasting impression, and Crystal now pays it forward to young nurses entering Public Health.
"Every interaction matters, whether in person or over the phone. Be open to change, be flexible, and build your capacity. Every experience enhances your assessment abilities," she advises.
Crystal's Making Waves Award of Distinction is a testament to her curiosity, compassion, and collaborative spirit. Her journey reminds us that lasting impact can be achieved through daily acts of teamwork, mentorship, and putting clients first.
