British Diplomat Expelled from Russia: A Spy Accusation and Diplomatic Tensions
In a recent development, a British diplomat has been expelled from Russia, sparking diplomatic tensions between the two countries. The expulsion comes after the Russian foreign ministry received information suggesting a diplomatic employee at the British embassy was affiliated with the British secret service.
The Russian domestic intelligence agency, FSB, summoned the British chargé d'affaires, Danae Dholakia, to inform her of the expulsion. The ministry stated that Moscow would not tolerate the activities of undeclared British intelligence officers in Russia and warned of a decisive response if the UK escalated the situation.
This incident follows a pattern of reciprocal diplomat expulsions between Russia and the UK since the start of the war in Ukraine. In March of last year, Russia expelled a UK diplomat and the spouse of another, claiming they were spies. In response, the UK expelled a Russian diplomat, with the then-foreign secretary, David Lammy, accusing Russia of a campaign of intimidation against British embassy staff and repeated attempts to threaten UK security.
The UK Foreign Office has been contacted for comment, and the situation remains under close scrutiny as both countries navigate the complexities of international relations and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
